Resident Evil - One More Round

I just got back from seeing the new installment in the Resident Evil franchise and it is pretty much the best of the bunch. That is not saying much since th previous films were downright awful. Thisfilm is a hodepodge of other films including Land of the Dead, Day of the Dead, X-Men, Carrie and, of all things, The Birds. Look, the film has no plot but it makes money. I am curious how people will look back on these films 70 years from now. The films have really nothing going for them except name recognition from a video game that they are based on. (and those games are based on a lot of old zombie films)

I think that these films will be remembered like the old Blind Dead films from Spain that were released in the 1970's. They were released in an $80.00 boxed set DVD. Now, 99% of the population of the world never heard of those long forgotten those films that were financially successful on the drive in market generations ago, but horror fans kept the memory of the films alive by writing about them. I'd say that the Resident Evil films may end up in that category although admittedly, the Resident Evil series was WAY more popular and well known than the Blind Dead series ever was and made way more money, but the Resident Evil films are awful and poorly written and pale in comparison to the new horror classics that have been released in the past five years.

Blood of the Werewolf!

Yes, it took all the way up to 2001 for a movie to come up with the title Blood of the Werewolf! And it took until 2007 for me to discover it and add it to my netflix queue. Now, I didn't watch it yet because it hasn't arrived. (Netflix sent me a note that said it will ship from Flushing, NY - 3,000 miles away which means thay have one copy of it and no one else wants to watch it) This is a low budget cable TV/DVD release that probably will suck to the same degree that all the other films of this nature suck.

However, two of best werewolf films I have ever seen - actually, two of the all time best horror movies ever made - were direct to DVD releases and they totally blew me away. The first was DOG SOLDIERS and the second was GINGER SNAPS. Now, these are technically not dirct to video releases as they were foreign films (British and Candian respectively) that saw theatrical releases in their own country and not part of the crank 'em out mill that spawns a number of crappy horror films but I disgress.

Anyway, this trilogy of werewolf stories will probably be ROTTEN ala my last bad werewolf experience THE BIG BAD WOLF, but I am willing to check it out.

Shopping Cart Software

All businesses need a solid stream of revenue. After all, if a business is unable to sell its service or product then it will be out of business. Of course, there also needs to be a collection method for pulling in the revenue and, in the case of an online business, the need for solid shopping cart softwareor ecommerce software program is critical. If the shopping software is not up to par or effective, the ability to collect revenue will be hampered. Additionally, if the customer finds the shopping cart software to be difficult to deal with they simply will opt to shop elsewhere. People simply do not like to waste time. So, it is better to stick with a solid and established company such as Ashop Commerce as it provides some of the highest quality shopping cart software available on the market. So, please…follow the links and see what they have available.

Saw IV Teaser Trailer

Thanks to the funky folks over at YouTube, I have a copy of the SAW IV teaser trailer for you to check out if you haven't seen it in theaters yet.

SAW III was a mega surprise as for me as I was left undrwhelmed with SAW II. SAW III, however, was a brilliant horror film and probably one of the absolute best horror movies ever produced. (Ok, it is not up there with BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, but it is a brilliant film) So, I am looking forward to number four. Here is the teaser:

Black Light Bulb

Since Halloween is upcoming and I am planning to watch a lot of old school horror movies on AMC this October, I headed over to the local Rite Aid and pucked up a black light bulb because it will have a thoroughly spooky effect on the viewing experience. Not sure if I am going to use a lampshade or not. if I do, should pick up one from BrownsLampShades.com as they have a very cool selection. The link will take you to them if you wish to check it out as well. Sponsored Post.

Finally Caught Zombie's Halloween Remake

finally made it to the theaters to catch Rob Zombie's remake of the original Halloween and I have to say it was undeserved of the ciritcal drubbing that it received mainly because it was not so much a bad film as two films put together in a double feature. You had the first half of the film being a prequel to the original Halloween and then the later half being a rushed remake. (And some padded kill scenes thrown in haphazardly as well) The prequel was disturbing and engaging while the remake was not all that well made. My complaint here is that I felt engaged in one film (the prequel) then when it ended I had to shift gears and enjoy a completely new film that was not as interesting. This makes Halloween a disjointed effort, but not all that bad of a film as far ar late summertime horror movies go.

From Beyond - The Director's Cut Arrives and Empire Pictures is Remembered

It may have taken 21 years, but the uncut version of Stuart Gordon's FROM BEYOND (1986) has finally received a release in the form of a DVD special edition.
(Yes, I was one of those people who purchased a copy of the Hong Kong DVD off of ebay and, no, the DVD didn't have any special scenes on it)

FROM BEYOND was Gordon's follow up to his masterpiece RE-ANIMATOR and, unlike RE-ANIMATOR, distributot Empire Pictures opted not to release FB unrated when the MPAA slapped it with the kiss of death X-Rating for violence. Perhaps Empire was running scared. Many people forget Charles Band's old Empire Pictures these days - mainly because 99% of their films were absolutely awful - but they dumped..errr...released a number of "popular" low budget monster flicks during the 1980's such as TROLL, GHOULIES, TERRORVISION (AWFUL film with a funky opening theme song)the underrated PRISON, and a host of others. While some of these films performed better than expected at the box office (hence, GHOULIES and TROLL saw a number of direct to video sequels) Empire was able to survive a short while, but changing times (a drive in movie company in the days where there were no more drive ins) sealed the fate of the company.

While most horror fans ripped on Empire, I was more appreciative of their efforts. Yes, the films were bad, but they did not have the hate and contempt towards their audience that Troma always expressed. And, I don't care what anyone says, Troma films were NEVER as popular with horror fans as the faux history books will tell you.

Empire was at least cranking out films for a while, but many of them ended up going direct to cable or video. Ironically, you could make the argument that Full Moon Pictures and Empire are the same company with only the names being different, but Full Moon has made a fortune on the DVD/Cable circuit despite following pretty much the exact formula the Empire did 20 years ago.

Empire's distribution was also spotty at best. While RE-ANIMATOR played theatrically and was heavily hyped in Philadelphia (the film received a full page ad in the Inquirer...unheard of for an unrated horror film) FROM BEYOND was NEVER released theatrically in Philly. Gordon's third film, the borish DOLLS, however, was released and it died a miserably death in Philly and everywhere else.

Since FROM BEYOND was released theatrically elsewhere in the USA I can not categorize it as a direct to video release although that was how I first viewed it and that will be the next installment of our FROM BEYOND retrospct.

Hope for the Future

Hello all.

These loast few weeks have been ultra busy for me thanks to the recent success of my business. This has been a major godscend for me because all more work and efforts in building up my online business over the past two years has paid off.

Unfortunately, it also cut way into my leisure writing time and I have not written aby profound and lengthy entries is a while and, instead, opting to provide my usually news updates and blurbs on what is upcoming on the theatrical and DVD scene.

Well, with the upcoming Halloween season upon us, this will change BIG TIME.

In October, the cable channels (AMC in particular) will run a ton of classic horror programming and what I plan on doing is provide a running commentary of the programming as it airs. Some commentary will be brief, some will be in depth. All of it, however, will be an interesting stream of semi-consciousness insight into classic horror.

Classic?

Oh, did I forget to mention that I will be covering the new releases that will be coming out in theatres as well? Yes, Halloween season will prove to be a fun one for this blog!

Remake of My Bloody Valentine??????

I have been meaning to write about the 1981 cult classic MY BLOODY VALENTINE for a while now and while doing a little research on the film today, I discovered that LIONSGATE FILMS has acquired the REMAKE rights for the film for a 2010 (?) release.

Three years to do a low budget slasher flick?

what is somewhat humorous here is that the original film was perceived by paramount to be a huge franchise series to complement their Friday the 13th Series. However, MBV did poorly at the box office. well, it did about $5million which was HUGE by slasher film standards (F13th and HALLOWEEN notwithstanding)

However, $5million wasn't enough to warrant a sequel and this was, IMO, a big mistake. More on the original in a later installment.

And by the way....what does this mean for the MBV Part 2 sequel that is in development?

Conqueror Worm/Witchfinder General is Here!

Sorry about this slipping my mind folks, but I wanted to mention than one of the most stunning horror films that has ever been made - the 1967 Vincent Price classic THE WITCHFINDER GENERAL is now out on special edition DVD. This is a powerful film and a must see for anyone who has a love of the horror genre. Keep in mind, this is a VERY STRONG film and even after 40 years is STILL difficult to watch in spots. This is a powerful film that despite the violence within its running time is a brilliant work

Celebrity Gossip

Are you a big fan of celebrity gossip? Hey, who isn't a fan of Celebrity Gossip? Well, if this is something that you dig big time you probably will want to check out StarMuscle.com as it is one of the greatest resources for those into such a topic. This is a solid site with lots of news and info. Check out there press release which is reproduced right here:

Welcome to Starmuscle.com, your backdoor into Dirty Hollywood. Star Muscle is a 100% Free site. I know every website says that’s its Free, then they lie to your face, well not me and not here. So why the name Starmuscle.com? Simple….all the good domain names have been taken and this crappy one was left over. I still have to come up with a catch phrase I guess, like “Flex your Star Muscle”; maybe “Show me the star muscle”; or even “Star Muscle - Paparazzi on Steroids”. The more I think about it, the more cheesy it gets. Let starmuscle.com mean anything you want, as long as it keeps you coming back.

I hope you enjoy this website and please don’t spam the comments with useless affiliate links or self-serving links to your websites. We want to keep this site SPAM-FREE and also advertisement FREE for at least one year. This website is rated PG-13 with crude humor, drug references, racial sarcasm, vulgarity, and mild nudity. Frankenstein Conquers the World

Well, he isn't so much Frankenstein as much as he is a mutant that eats the heart of the Frankenstein Monster and he doesn't conquer the world so much as he pretty snarls and growls. Oh, and he grows up to the height of 100 ft and if you watch the original Japanese version FRANKENSTEIN VS THE GIANT DEVIL FISH you can see him fight a giant octopus in an ending EXCISED from the US release in 1964.

Yes, this sounds like a wild film and for those looking to compare the original version of the film (subtitled in English) and the US theatrical release, you can pick up the new double DVD release by the groovy people over at Tokyo Shock dvd.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not a "schlock" film. Ok, it really is. But it is not a BAD film and it is a very enjoyable giant monster entry from the golden days of Toho monster mayhem

Here are some random notes for ya....

The uncut version of SAW III is headed to DVD in a boxed set in a few weeks. Considering that the third installment in the saw seris was one of the best horror movies of many years this is a highly anticipated releaase. Additionally anticipated for release is the DVD special edition of THE WITCHFINDER GENERAL and that will hit store shelves in a scant one week. And Rob Zombies's HALLOWEEN broke the labor day record in a huge surprise.

Also, I need to make a little mention of what I have been doing with my time. Well, I have been...WORKING! Yes, my business has picked up a little after a horrible summer. Now, since I have been tapped to write about current events and history as well as some marketing work, this has led me to find any time to enjoy a horror book or movie. So, that left me without material for a short bit. Well. now that I am getting extra free time, looks like i will be back to providing this blog will more of groovy insights

Werewolf By Night Vol 2 is Coming!

For those who remember my RAVE review of the first volume of the Marvel Essentials Werewolf by night release, you probably also remember that Werewolf by Night remains one of my all time favorite comics of the 1970's. Well, here is some more good news to rave about: the second volume in the Essential Werewolf By Night Series will be released in November (hopefully it will be released on time unlike Ramapaging Hulk!)
The issues in the second volume cover some cool story arcs as there were a number of werewolf vs vampire and werewolf vs werewolf storylines that made the series super enaging and fun to read. More impressively, the series remained fun and engaging while never losing sight of being FRIGHTENING as well.

Oh, on a side note, you folks may wish to check out my other blog as well. It covers the subject of TV and is a Classic Television Blog trust me, you wll dig it

Business Management Solutions

When it comes to business management, there are a great many facets that have to be taken into consideration in order to effectively operate the business. One are that is often somewhat ignored is the area of office supplies. It is funny how this is sometimes ignored because you can’t run a business without pens, paper, and light bulbs. Now, in today’s day and age, in addition to these basic necessities there is also the need for expansive, comprehensive Business Management Software that can aid in proper business management functions. For example, the business software offered by Forturo is among the best business management software on the market as it can provide all sorts of multifaceted solutions such as tracking profits, managing work loads, and overseeing stock. In short, this is an excellent system and those looking for a new business software solutions program should follow the link to Futuro’s homepage and learn more about the software in detail. Keep a few things in mind, the proper way to run a business will always be centered on efficiency and if a software program can help streamline operations and return a level of efficiency to the way one operates then a great deal of stress and strain will be removed from management’s shoulders. Certainly, that is a huge positive. Sponsored post.

Halloween Does Awesome Box Office

Despite the flaws and the terrible reviews, HALLOWEEN has seemingly performed incredibly at the box office pulling in close to 26 million dollars the first weekend. This should come as no surprise as when Halloween 4 brought the franchise back it did strong box office and when HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION was released it did close to $50 million. The question is why does Halloween do so well all the time while the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street films can't seem to resurrct themselves solo (the Jason/Freddie team up did do huge numbers)?

Because the old Halloween movies play perpetually on TV every Halloween and this keeps the franchise alive in people's minds. In a way, the perpetual seasonal reruns are almost like infomercials.

29 years and still going strong. We may keep seeing (bad) Halloween movies for decades to come
